In an article entitled “Resisting and reshaping destructive development: social movements and globalizing networks”, P. Routledge describes neoliberal development, “Contemporary economic development is guided by the economic principles of neoliberalism and popularly termed ‘globalization’. Neoliberalism has been described as the ‘idea that swallowed the world’.1 We argue that the world also ‘swallowed’ (uncritically accepted) neoliberalism, and that this should be challenged. We trace the rise of neoliberalism, including its emergence in New Zealand and its implications for health. ‘Neoliberalism’ is a widely used term that travelled from economic philosophy into policymaking, and from policymaking into critical social scientific discourse in the late twentieth century. It refers to a form of capitalism ascendant since the 1970s but informed by post-war economic philosophical ideas.
